A chilly evening in the Verge Cemetery. Verity stands with her arms folded, facing the elegant stone fountain. Her deep Valerias rose armor and bright gold thigh high boots seem unreasonably luxurious in the surrounds.
Holding the note that Verity had sent on to him, Ajamar quietly wanders up behind her and is startled by her actually being there. Looking over her blearily.
"Oh . . .you're back." he offers absently, as he slowly lowers himself onto the dark mossy grass. Holding his aching head.
"For several hours. I've been praying." she says quietly, little to no inflection in her voice. Hands clasped behind her back.
"Huh. Your job went fine, I take it." is his ever so polite reply, as he hides his hand in his sleeve.
"Yeah. I retook the Proud Crimson, and returned on Olivias Grace. It was a Naval condition.. The Iron Ring have taken to the seas. Which adds to our issues overall."
Keeping her back turned to him, she continues. "Stealing Crown vessels to use for slaving, also stealing the cargo for resale.
If possible they were taking the Kings Forces aboard as slave stock. So, they had to be stopped. At least I could help with this instance."
"Getting bolder. Could try and cut off maritime trade from Mirros, if the KAF isn't careful."
"The sea is becoming more dangerous than land, with the Manticore and Eagles building a naval position but you're right that was what they're working against, exactly. Though the ship was supposed to be empty, it wasn't. They've got significant problems with infiltration.
By the way I got censured for not being present to help on a daily basis in Mirros, again." Adding the important fact in an offhand way, at the very end. Glancing at him out of the corner of her eye.
"Want you to change and move back, do they?" he says bitterly.
"Yes. At this stage they'll even accept me as I am. I was fighting for us, it made the report I read on my ride home much more upsetting. " Verity now folds her arms, shifting and clenching her jaw.
"I see... Well, Uh . . .yeah. " Staring directly at his hand again and lowering his head.
"I was pretty much set on a fairly big fight, probably throw my keys at you. Quit the council.. I had a nice big explosion all planned out. Then I realised you were probably more upset than I could ever be. And I don't need to tell you that I told you so and that I said not to go down there. " she explains, still keeping her back to him.
Ajamar sighs deeply and speaks quietly. "I can get a room at the fool's pride for now."
"If you choose to go, I will leave. I will go back to Mirros as asked. I will quit my job here and return to the fold, possibly make my rank public. So you better think carefully on whether you're going to stop wallowing and fight for us. The way I did the whole time I was away. " in a voice that is deadly quiet.
"You haven't seen what . . . is left of . .. " he trails off as he glances at his hand and looks away, his voice thick with tears.
"I don't need to see it. There's nothing that could happen to you that would disgust me. Skeletonisation isn't death, so stop being a baby." she replies with no conviction as she turns around sadly. Trails of tears marching down her own cheeks a she crouches down in front of him.
"Makes me ill just to look at it."he whispers.
"Well that's because you're a stupid idiot for doing it. Mistakes make me upset as well. All of them are in deep fucking trouble at this point." Verity growls as she leans forward, trying to get a better look at his hand.
"No one forced anyone to go. " Ajamar's pained and concilatory reply doesn't quite cool off any of that anger.
"No one should have gone, whatsoever. Even if your hand wasn't damaged. It was an assault on a potential ally, for what?"
"Potential ally?" the confused response as he pulls his hand further up into his sleeve. Avoiding her gaze and also looking at it.
"I told you before, I own a soul crystal of Silt's. We were to be invited to sit down and discuss a potential deal to become allies.
"You've mentione this Silt once in passing, but don't remember anything about the crystal. "
"I spoke of it twice at least. " comes her exasperated sigh, with a slight smile at the end to take the edge off it.
"Guess I missed it somehow, or wasn't thinking about it, sorry. Guess your meeting is messed up." he says absently, giving her a quick flash of his pained eyes.
Verity takes a deep breath and continues in a soft voice. Now sitting cross legged, across from one another with their foreheads basically touching. "I would be deeply surprised if she survived your incursion.
Basically you all infiltrated the city of a dear friend of mine and possibly killed her. Also you're now suffering. "
"No way I'd know. Seems most were brought back from what I heard." Is his shocked and concerned reply.
"I am not surprised, just disappointed. Deeply.
Now you have to decide to whom you will offer your pride up on a platter to repair your hand. Cassanna, Valerias or Lumina. Gods or Arcana?" Verity says, resting her hands on his sleeves gently. Feeling the distinctive differences as he shifts uncomfortably under her quesitoning gaze. "I thought we were a team, Ajamar. "
"I was, I thought backing up a friend. Clearly, your talk of your friend didn't sink in. Wasn't intentionally trying to hurt you, you know.
Sorry, that I did, though. "
"You need to prove it. Sober the hell up and take responsibility for your actions. What happened is a divine punishment for your refusal to do what's right.
This City's actions make me wish I died on the hillside in the Teppes."
"I don't."
At that, she exposes his damaged hand. All the muscles and flesh removed in their entirety. Taking the skeletal hand and resting it against her cheek. He flinches and runs his other, undamaged hand through his silver grey hair - exposing the soft gold threads of hair among the rest.
They gently converse in an unfamiliar language to most. Coming to an agreement as they stand and embrace. Walking down the incline to find Archmage Lumina.
