The sound of feminine giggles rouses me from reverie.
"That Little Mouse keeps her promises, has it already been three months?"
I catch myself thinking aloud and, without realising it, I have already left my room, and look towards the stairs down to the Kitten's rooms. It won't be long until they want to run up and get me, may as well save the darlings the trouble and make my way down; what treats await us this glorious... morning? Afternoon? Afternoon.
Down the first set of stairs I pass through the living level, the variously coloured doors are open, all rooms unoccupied, even Laren's. An open book on the floor and an unmade bed, in an otherwise tidy room. Oh my my my, is he keen on Amarwyn? Either that or he had to rush to the commode.
I shrug to the thought as it leaves, undoing a button or two and muss my hair, crafting a well practiced disheveled look, ready to meet my kids. I can't have them thinking that I'm a ... professional. I shudder away the vile thoughts of paperwork and strike a pose in the next stairway, from living to business, I close my eyes and lean on a worn handrail, taking in the sounds of happiness while I wait to see who will meet me.
"Dani. Dani." Softly spoken, yet commanding.
I don't know why I expected anyone other than the delightful Iris; a human girl in her late teens, almost always seen in a nice dress & apron combo, to meet me. I smile at her, opening my eyes slowly.
"Petal, did you put a pot of tea?"
"Coffee, Dani. You know more people prefer coffee here."
Iris pauses, eventually giving me a slightly coquettish smirk.
I know there is going to be a cup of tea waiting for me.
"Quit staring at me, and get down here, Amarwyn has arrived, and she brought two cakes with her today."
With that, Iris turns, and leaves me with the portraits in the stairway, of scholars past and present.
I take my time as I meander down the last few steps and towards the kitchen. All four seats already taken; my brother Tomi has a glass of wine with his cake, how... typically Tom. Beside him is Laren, surprisingly not eyeing the wine, as if we don't notice that he likes to occasionally sneak a sip, his eyes are on the young Elven girl next to him. Amarwyn sits, Laren on one side and Iris on the other, her face beaming with pride.
"Sirs, please enjoy these cakes." Amarwyn blushes, indicating the cakes on the table.
I walk around the table to lean against the bench. There is already a thin slice of each cake on a plate to accompany my tea. The conversing lasts until Iris kicks us all out so she can prepare dinner. Tom heads to his reading nook, Laren and Amarwyn join him much to his mild irritation, chattering away still.
I refuse to leave the kitchen, Iris can call me a 'petulant child' all she wants, it won't change that I enjoy watching her cook, and I need to sometimes do what I enjoy.
