Religious Characters in Mystara
Any and all characters can follow an immortal in Mystara. That immortal needs to be FROM Mystara, or be discussed with the Core Team* previously before introducing a new immortal or demi immortal. If you are portraying a crazy character that follows a non existent immortal, please also let the Core Team know as well so that we can manage any enquiries into the lore of your immortal from other characters with a high lore score who wish to research.
Any class can have a preference for an immortal. Any class can pray to an immortal. They may be enamoured with an immortal that is not in their alignment preference. They may not understand or know them well. Perhaps that immortal is not even listening to them. Religion is complicated.
There are also non divine characters with religious duties. Defense and work for the Church, Tithes, Collections, Confession etc. Anyone can assist the church, not everyone actually gains divine power from prayer.
Religious Characters with a divine class: Paladin / Cleric / Monk / Champion etc.
Characters that accept divine power from their immortal are just very good at worship. They are many and they are often experienced, but that does not mean an immortal is whispering in their ear all day long. It just means a mere fraction of the power of a god is being extended to them in the aim to do work for their long term world goals. It is a small, negligent offering for a very short time in the reflection of their immortal stay of omnipotence. You are not terribly special to them unless otherwise agreed upon.
Think of this as applying to be a pastor or a preacher in real life. You can just start doing it, being godly and helping people and doing right you may have a near death or emotional experience that makes you devote your life to this. It's easy to find a way to get into it. However if you are not careful, it is easy to find a way to fall out of it too.
If you do wrong, if you go against the nature of your religion openly - you will be called out and disgraced. In the game this may be a loss of your alignment and being unable to use your powers and or continue to level your class. It is very difficult / nigh impossible to come back from this sort of alignment shift. Depending on your faction, you may also end up being outlawed and or permadeathed (like for the Black Eagle, for instance). You may think this is unfair, but such is the life of choosing divine favour as an additional power source for your character in a roleplay setting. It is a responsibility that only you can take or leave.
Immortals direct intervention with a character.
The real life person who claims to speak to god is either correct or insane. In the Mystara Alternate setting, you are either approved by the DM's to have direct immortal intervention or you will be treated as having mental issues and or psychosis / hallucinations. Some find this unfair, as why would you have an option to be a divine champion without allowing them to claim closeness with their immortal? Because the Immortals are busy. They do not have time to speak to every backwater level 2 Paladin who thinks they have a good life story.
Communication with the highest power in DnD / Pen and Paper is at the Dungeon Master discretion. It is the same here. You must speak to the Core Team* directly and get permission for a storyline, anecdote, backstory, frontstory, between the lines musing that includes your character ACTUALLY having immortal intervention and it must be agreed upon with us. Failure to do so may include a server wide retcon notice to other players and or a character deletion.
If you are at all confused, our door is always open to discuss character ideas, backstory, immortals and other divine nature with you!
